Nika in Memoriam
Artist’s Notes
Nika joined our family when my oldest turned two, growing up alongside the kids and becoming the quiet center of our home. She was steady, watchful, playful, and always close by — happiest in the water, on the trail, or chasing a tennis ball with full devotion.
Last year she began having seizures, and we slowly understood that something deeper was happening, likely a brain tumor. As her mobility and behavior changed, we knew we were nearing the moment no one wants to face. I blocked out her image on this canvas during that time — I couldn’t paint her while she was still with us — and it sat untouched until the day came.
Her passing was peaceful. My oldest and I stayed with her through the entire process, holding her and loving her as she slipped away. Before we left for the vet, I pressed her paw in ink and placed it on the canvas — once in the lower right corner, and again in the right mountain. I kept the masking fluid over that second print; preserving it felt right, like keeping a small part of her close.
Nika loved the water. She loved hiking. She loved watching over all of us. This painting holds those memories — her gentleness, her strength, her presence — a quiet tribute to the dog who shaped our family and remains deeply loved.
