Yuletide Murder did not turn out the way I planned — at all. I wanted the ribcage to feel like a cave lit by fire, with glowing branches and cave‑painting influences. I researched cave art, imagined warm flickering light, and thought I could pull it off. But the piece had other ideas. I was listening to Krampus while painting, and somewhere along the way the crows took over, the glow shifted, and the whole thing leaned into a strange holiday mood. It’s a Bone Series piece born from creative misfires, eerie winter energy, and the unexpected places art goes when you let it.

So Humerus was painted in spring, when the cherry trees were blooming and everything felt soft and new. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted from this piece at first — I just knew I wanted to paint birds, and I wanted the humerus to feel like part of the landscape instead of separate from it. The blossoms, the river, the wildflowers… they all arrived naturally. It’s a quiet Bone Series piece, one where anatomy becomes terrain and spring light settles into every corner.

Femoron began on our family New Year’s walk — a tradition I love. We were on a nearby country road when I saw a tree that stopped me in my tracks. Ferns and moss cascaded down one side, the base was hollow enough for my kids to climb inside, and the trunk looked almost burned, like lightning had kissed it. I felt connected to it immediately. Afterward we wandered to the golf course, where my kids chased geese across the winter grass. All of that — the moss, the hollow tree, the cold air, the geese, the sense of wonder — found its way into this Bone Series piece. It’s a femur shaped by memory, landscape, and the quiet magic of that day.
